Berlingeri, born in 1948 in Cittanova, Province of Regio Calabria,
Italy, lives and works in Taurianova (RC). His interest
for art and painting starts when he is still young. In 1964 he
moves to Piemonte, in Northern Italy, where he works as a
decorator. In 1968 he sets out on a series of journeys throughout
Italy and Europe in order to know and study the artistic
and cultural life marking those years. In 1970 he is charged
with his first tasks in TV and theatre as a set and costume
designer, an activity, which will grow, in the 80’s, so much as
to become the constant factor influencing his pictorial production.
The beginning of his pictorial research is inspired by
the conceptual and abstract atmosphere of the 70’s. Then he
experiments techniques, manners of painting and materials
that already in 1976 will lead him to work on the foldings of
the canvas. In the same time he develops the theme of light
and its impalpability: he makes use of very light layers of flax,
which being superimposed create different levels of deepnes
and games of transparencies. The Eighties are a stage of development
characterized by a return to painting: he works at a
large-size works realized with wide gestures making use of oil
paints and synthetic enamel. In 1987 he starts making use of
iron plates, thick beewax surfaces, wood and pure pigments,
bringing forward experimentations in marks and colours announcing
the future development of his work: in fact, he will
concentrate on the theme of foldings. From 1989 to 1995 he
teaches in a course of scene painting at the Accademia d’Arte
Drammatica della Calabria in Palmi. In the 90’s important solo
exhibitions are dedicated to him. In Messina he shows works
at the teatro vittorio Emanuele. In Milan, in 1994, he exhibits
at the Fondazione Mudima the large installation “Piegare
la notte” (Folding the Night). During these years solo and
group exhibitions become more and more frequent. His last
production is marked by a geater simplification and rigour.
In 2007 and 2008 three important Brazilian museums, the
MAC Museum de Goiania, the MAM Museum de Arte Moderna
in Rio de Janeiro and the MAM Museu de Arte Moderna
in Salvador de Bahia, present a major solo exhibition
which shows the creative path of the artist from 1967 to 2007
